Taking the industry by Storm

General Queries

The role of a background extra is so varied and will change from production to production, it can even change from scene to scene. You could be in a big ballroom scene dancing with a complete stranger as if you are loves young dream and the very next scene be a beggar on the side of the road. The thing to remember is that most of your work will be done in silence. The great news is that nearly all productions will rely on extras at some point to create realism for their movie, so there will be plenty of opportunities available. Working as a background actor gives you a rare and wonderful insight into the workings of a film set all while being paid. It can often be a valuable stepping stone to becoming an Actor!

Anyone! Extras are used to create depth and realism to a scene, so just like real life a production will need people of all ages, shapes, sizes, and ethnic backgrounds to accurately represent today’s society or the society of the time, if they are shooting a period drama.

No! What you will need is some common sense and patience. Once you are on set you will be looked after by the assistant directors or the extras coordinator depending on the size of the job. They will tell you exactly what is required of you.

Unfortunately, we are not able to tell you how often you will be offered work. We are given a breakdown by Production of their requirements and only the extras that match those requirements will be put forward for that particular production. However, we are work with many different productions so hopefully you won’t be waiting long to get your chance.

Of course! Having limited availability may reduce your chances of being booked but it doesn’t mean it is not a possibility. It may just take a bit longer before you get the
chance to have an adventure on set.

There really is no definite answer to this question. Film schedules are notorious for changing at the very last minute for many different reasons but mainly due to the unpredictability of the Irish weather. We really can only confirm a booking the afternoon/evening of the day before filming and sometimes even then it can change! That is why being flexible with your availability will give you the best chance of being booked.

The better your pictures are or even better again if you have completed a video registration the better your chances will be of being booked.  The more detail you can give us about yourself will also increase your chances.  We get requests for lots of different skill sets so the more we know about you the better!  Once you have been lucky enough to be booked just remember the 3 golden rules

  1. Show up on time
  2. Be friendly and courtesy
  3. Listen to the directions you’ve been given

Following those simple rules will insure you get booked again.  These are the things that are noticed but more importantly remembered

Yes, it’s a huge advantage and will definitely increase your chances of being booked.
The film industry is very sporadic and film schedules can change at the very last minute for lots of reasons, weather being a huge one. Being flexible and available at short notice make you a perfect candidate for the life of an extra.

Your Profile

It is so simple to register with us. All you need to do is fill in our application form and submit two pictures. One to be head and shoulders and the second to be a full length picture. Please take the time to read over our tips to help you take a good picture, the better your picture the better your chances. We will also need a copy of your passport or drivers license. If you would like to be put forward for a small part or to be a feature extra we recommend that you complete our video application. When you have been booked we will need your pps number.

Just like having accurate measurements having your picture updated is just as important. You could be booked on a job because you are clean shaven with a tight haircut but in reality, you now have a beard and long hair or vice a versa. If you turn up to a job looking differently to your profile picture then Hair, Make Up and Wardrobe may need more time with you, which they hadn’t accounted for or worst case scenario you will be sent home, unpaid. More importantly than that you will have tarnished your reputation. Our reputation depends on yours and you may never get another booking..

If your contact details change, please phone 085 138 35 80 or email fionadeasy@stormextras.ie as soon as you can so we can update your profile. We rely on email and text messages to check availability and then provide any details relating to the production you are booked on. If the information we have is inaccurate we won’t be able to contact you and offer you work.

It is absolutely no problem to have your profile deleted, please send an email to
fionadeasy@stormextras.ie. We will respond to your email as soon as we can to let you know you have been removed from our database. If there are monies owed to you, we may need to wait till these have been paid before we delete you. If you change your mind and would like to rejoin that is no problem just fill out a new application and you will be good to go!

Please, please, please take the time to fill in your measurements accurately. Inaccurate measurements may result in you being booked for a very specific job but when you arrive the costume won’t fit. This creates such a problem for the Wardrobe Department but ultimately may result in you being sent home, unpaid.  More importantly than that you will have tarnished your reputation.  Our reputation depends on yours and you may never get another booking.  Remember we need all shapes and sizes so never feel embarrassed about the numbers, you are perfect just as you are so, please take the time to get it right.

Children And Parents

Most of the briefs we fill are for adults, in saying that we do get asked to cast for children, but the opportunities are much lower. That doesn’t mean your child won’t be booked for a production but please be aware that it might take longer before you have a confirmed booking.

There is absolutely no difference between casting for a child and casting for an adult. If your child matches the criteria put forward from Production, we will contact you to check their availability (an availability check). If they are available their details will be sent to Production. If your child is lucky enough to be chosen, we will get back in touch to confirm the booking.

You will need to be on set to look after your child between takes, while they are setting up the camera and during any breaks. It will be up to you to make sure your child is fed but the assistant directors will be able to assist you with this. There is always an element of hanging around on a film set so please bring something that will keep your child entertained. Please try and avoid bringing expensive video games if possible as these will not be replaced if they get damaged or lost.

Before a child can start filming, they will need to have applied for and received a child license. If the child is attending school, there is a section of the form that needs to be filled in by the principal of their school. We will provide you with all the relevant forms when the time comes.

Payment

The rate of pay varies from production to production. Before you agree to a day of
filming, you will have been informed what that rate will be.

Payments will usually be made 6-8 weeks after your shoot date. It will depend how quickly the Production releases the funds to us. Once we have received the monies, we will pay you. Please only contact us regarding payment if it has been longer than 8 weeks.

We will transfer the money directly into your bank account. Please make sure you have provided us with your bank details and that they are correct. Inaccurate bank details will mean your payment will be delayed.

Each production will operate slightly differently some productions will pay quicker than others. If you’ve worked across a number of different Productions, you will receive a number of different payments at different times. If you haven’t received everything that is owed to you after 8 weeks please get in touch and let us know.

Getting A Booking!

Once we have been given the details by Production of exactly what their requirements are we will select the extras most suited to that role. Before we send anything to Production we need to check with you that you are available on the dates required. This is known as an availability check. This does not mean you are booked. Once we have sent over all the extras that match Productions criteria, they will decide who suits the role best. At that stage we will be in touch to confirm you are booked for that day or days.

Absolutely not!! In fact, it will have the very opposite effect. We need people to be honest with us. It is much better for everyone if you say no at the very beginning rather than pulling out closer to the shoot day. Saying yes and then cancelling causes lots of different departments including ourselves a huge headache.

If you have any questions regarding a production you are booked on please drop us an email to fionadeasy@stormextras.ie or call us on 085 138 35 80 and we’ll be happy to help.

A lot can change very quickly when it comes to a film schedule. Weather being a big reason things need to be changed around at the last minute. We will usually only send you the information to a production you are booked on the afternoon/early evening of the day before. Please make sure you check your emails and particularly your spam folder in case the email is in there.

Please, please, please let us know as soon as possible that you are no longer available. We do understand that things can happen that could change your availability. The sooner we know the sooner we can start working on getting you replaced, saving all our reputations.

You should have received a copy of “the extras guidebook”. This covers all you need to know before your big day and during your day of filming. If after you’ve gone through the guidebook, and you still have a query please drops us a mail to info@stormextras.ie.
